Kalanchoe - Mother of Millions, Chandelier Plant
Kalanchoe Delagoensis |
This little Kalanchoe plant is what I encountered when I was first introduced to it. Grayish black and tan tubular branches with the start of little baby Kalanchoe plants growing on the branches. I planted it in my yard and did not think much about it except for the fact that it was growing but not producing much color. After more than a year of growing it in my garden I thought I might get rid of it because it was not very pretty or colorful. One December day while in my garden I noticed a gorgeous, beautiful blossom on this seemingly dull plant. What a surprise! This plant is one of my favorite now and I propagate it in many places of my yard. It loves the sun and is a hearty plant. Starting new plants is easy to do since the babies on the plants fall off and root easily. More on propagating and growing this plant in my next post, Young Kalanchoe Delagoensis - Propagation and Growth, but first I want to take you through the flowering stage.
The Flowering Stages of Kalanchoe Delagoensis
Kalanchoe Beauty Coming! |
The budding of this Kalanchoe plant came about this year in October in our mild California climate and progressed to a full bloom by December. The little buds are a beauty with all sorts of soft colors - green, purple, pink and yellow. In the middle picture you can see the little baby plants that fall and root themselves in the soil below. This plant is sometimes referred to as Mother of Thousands and through the growing period there are hundreds, if not thousands of babies on each plant. One of these years I'm going to count all the baby plantlets on a single plant. Perhaps I'll let you know what I come up with.

As the flower matures it gets deeper in color.
In full bloom it is rich in color with vibrant orange, coral, scarlet and red tones.
Absolutely one of my favorite flowers!
There is beauty above and beneath this flowering plant. Depending on the position of the sun, at times the flower appears translucent from the side and
